Employment status change leads to higher taxes for workers in student organizations

A change in employment status for students working for the eight chartered student organizations has resulted in some students having to pay up to $800 at once in taxes this year, an amount that would have been smaller and spread out over the course of the year under the previous system of pay.

In attempts to increase minority enrollment, the Board of Trustees approved funds to sustain the Leadership Excellence and Academic Development Scholars Program, and Undergraduate Admission is boosting its recruitment strategies by teaming up with the Youth Empowerment Program, a student component of the Multicultural Center that promotes higher education in middle and high schools.

Funds for the university's operating budget, which usually increases annually by 3 percent, have been frozen for the 2008-2009 academic year. Though the operating budget applies to all departments, as well as the eight chartered student organizations, most groups say they will be able to accommodate the stagnant budgets without significant difficulty.
